Expo 2030. Preliminary Evaluation of Effects
The project aimed to provide a preliminary assessment of the potential effects of Rome's selection as the host city for EXPO 2030, specifically: I. direct economic effects stemming from event-specific revenues generated by institutional, corporate, community, and individual participation in EXPO; II. indirect economic effects estimated from micro-data on the consumption behaviors of national and international tourists, focusing on benefits for businesses of all sizes; III. fiscal effects estimated at the local and national governmental levels based on the aforementioned impacts; IV. effects on the intangible resources of the territory (Rome Capital) and the entire Country, measured in terms of the differential value of reputation (cognitive, attitudinal, and behavioral dimensions) and the incremental competencies generated by EXPO ROMA 2030; V. carry-over effects, especially from indirect, fiscal, and intangible resource impacts, typically spanning at least two years following the EXPO event; VI. effects on option portfolios generated by the World EXPO event in a broader sense and by the specific thematization, particularly considering the potential alignment of EXPO ROMA 2030 with the distinctive elements of the genius loci.
The project involved a phased analysis process:
- desk review of academic and professional literature as preparatory work;
- collection of relevant data to define direct, indirect, and induced effects;
- development of a customized estimation model based on thematic hypotheses, attractiveness capacity, visitor profile, national and institutional participation, and corporate and individual involvement;
- collection and validation of data through interviews with national and international stakeholders, local institution representatives, and members of the business community;
- definition of reference models for quantifying induced effects and carry-over effects;
- definition of an options portfolio and assessment in terms of probability of occurrence, option exercise cost, and value over time.
